A GVM teleprompter app alternative
GVM's TQ teleprompters come with a basic app and Bluetooth remote. If you want to load script files or control more than play and pause, Reframely runs the same rig from your browser.
Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig
- Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
- Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
- Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
- Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.
What GVM owners report
- Getting a script in. If the app won't open your file, paste the text in, or open the file in Reframely, which imports Word, text, Markdown and RTF.
- Remote buttons. If both buttons only play and pause, set the speed on screen, or map each button to its own action in Reframely's Clicker setup.
- Heavy hardware. The 12-inch GVM model is heavy and needs a sturdy tripod (Markus Hagner Photography).
Run your GVM rig with Reframely
- Open Reframely on the tablet or phone in the rig and tap Open prompter.
- Choose Your rig → Tablet in a glass rig (or the phone preset).
- Import your script: tap the pencil, then Import, and pick a .docx, .txt, .md or .rtf file.
- Pair a second phone as the remote. It adds speed, text size, line jumps and section jumps to what the GVM remote can do.
You can still use the GVM remote for play and pause: map its button in Clicker setup.
Getting a sharp read through the GVM glass
- Brightness first. Beam-splitter glass reflects only part of the screen's light. Turn brightness to maximum and switch off auto-brightness.
- Color set. White on black is the most common, but amber on black is softer on the eyes in a dark studio.
- Font. The Read font in Reframely is designed for distance reading; try it before making the text bigger.
- Background light. A bright window or lamp behind the camera reflects in the glass. Turn the rig, or block the light, rather than fighting it with brightness.
Supporting the weight
Larger GVM models with a heavy tablet need a sturdy tripod and head. Balance the rig over the tripod's centre column and tighten the tilt lock: if the rig creeps down mid-take, the reading line moves away from your eye line and the shot changes.
Moving between takes
When you reframe or move the camera, check the reading line is still in front of the lens. In Reframely you can drag the reading line in Display settings; it's remembered for that rig preset.
Questions
Can I load a PDF?
Not directly. Copy the text from the PDF and paste it, or save your script as .docx or .txt and import that.
Does Reframely show ads or splash screens?
No. It opens straight to the teleprompter.
