Use the Elgato Prompter or Prompter XL without Camera Hub's text mode

The Elgato Prompter is a 9-inch USB-C screen behind teleprompter glass. Because it works as a second display, any browser window can go on it, including Reframely, which you can then control from your keyboard, a Stream Deck or your phone.

Step by step: use an Elgato Prompter as a screen

  1. Set the Prompter to Display Mode. Connect the Elgato Prompter by USB-C and set it to Display Mode, so your computer sees it as a second screen. Camera Hub isn’t needed.
  2. Drag Reframely onto it. Open the prompter, drag the browser window onto the Prompter’s screen and press F for full screen.
  3. Leave Mirror off. The Elgato Prompter flips the picture itself, so pick the Elgato preset with Mirror off. If the words read backwards, turn Mirror on.
  4. Drive it from your hand. Use a clicker, a Stream Deck or (with Pro) your phone to play, pause and change speed while you look into the lens.

Why people look for another option

  • Text that won't scroll on Mac. Users on Apple silicon Macs reported Camera Hub's prompter text failing to scroll, with no fix posted in the thread (DisplayLink Forum).
  • DisplayLink pop-ups. On macOS Sonoma and Sequoia, the DisplayLink Manager window has been reported popping up and stealing keyboard focus while Camera Hub runs (DisplayLink Forum).
  • Paste-only scripts. A 2024 review notes scripts are typed or pasted in, with no document import (Podfeet).
  • Voice Sync needs specific hardware. Camera Hub's Voice Sync follows your speech, but it needs an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better on Windows, or Apple silicon (M1 or later) on a Mac (Elgato).
  • Uneven scroll speed. If speed changes on a long script seem to do nothing or jump, restart Camera Hub, or run the script from Reframely, where speed is set in words per minute.

Run Reframely on the Prompter

  1. Connect the Prompter and set it to Display Mode in Camera Hub, so your computer treats it as a monitor (Elgato).
  2. Open Reframely in a new browser window and drag the window onto the Prompter's screen.
  3. Tap the sliders icon and choose Your rig → Elgato Prompter or a prompter with its own screen.
  4. Press F for full screen. If the text reads backward through the glass, turn on Mirror.
  5. Control it with your keyboard, a Stream Deck button that sends a key, or pair your phone as the remote.

On a Mac, the Prompter still needs its DisplayLink driver to work as a display at all. Running Reframely avoids Camera Hub's text mode, not the driver. If DisplayLink Manager keeps popping up, one user reported that in Camera Hub 2.0 or later, holding Command while opening Preferences shows an option to stop Camera Hub from launching DisplayLink Manager (DisplayLink Forum).

Elgato Prompter XL

The Prompter XL is the larger model: a 15.6-inch Full HD screen at 600 nits, connected with a single USB-C cable, for $599.99 (AppleInsider, Videomaker). It works the same way as the original, so the same steps and the same Reframely preset apply. Per Elgato's documentation as reported by AppleInsider, an iPhone or iPad can't be used as its display source, so drive it from a Mac, Windows PC or Android device (AppleInsider).

What you gain

  • Import Word, text, Markdown and RTF scripts, and keep several of them.
  • Voice follow in Chrome, Edge and Safari on any computer, without needing an RTX graphics card or Apple silicon.
  • Your phone as a wireless remote, with section jumps for quick retakes.
  • Any key or Stream Deck button can be mapped to play, speed or line jumps.

Questions

Do I still need Camera Hub?

You need it to switch the Prompter into Display Mode and, on Mac, its DisplayLink driver. You don't need Camera Hub's text mode once Reframely is running on the screen.

Can I control Reframely with a Stream Deck?

Yes. Set a Stream Deck button to send a keystroke, such as Space for play and pause, then check or change the mapping in Reframely's Clicker setup.

Does voice follow work on the Elgato Prompter?

Yes, if your browser supports it (Chrome, Edge or Safari). Unlike Camera Hub's Voice Sync, it doesn't need an RTX graphics card or Apple silicon. In Chrome the audio goes to Google's speech service.

Does this work with the Elgato Prompter XL?

Yes. The XL is also a USB-C display, so you put it in Display Mode and drag the Reframely window onto it, the same as the original Prompter.
