A free teleprompter for Chromebook

Chromebooks, especially school-managed ones, often can't install the teleprompter apps made for phones and Macs. Reframely runs in Chrome, so it works on any Chromebook with nothing to install.

Step by step: read under your webcam

  1. Choose Laptop or desktop webcam. This preset puts a narrow column of text right under the camera, with the reading line near the top, so your eyes stay close to the lens.
  2. Keep it narrow and close to the lens. The shorter the distance between the words and the camera, the more it looks like you’re talking to the viewer. Keep the text small enough to read without leaning in.
  3. Run it beside your call or recorder. Zoom, Meet, Teams, OBS or QuickTime keep running underneath. Control the scroll with the keyboard, a clicker, a Stream Deck or your phone.

Set it up

  1. Open Reframely in Chrome and paste your script into the box on the home page, then press Start teleprompter.
  2. Tap the sliders icon and choose Your rig → Laptop or desktop webcam. This puts a narrow column of text right under the webcam.
  3. Resize the Chrome window so it's narrow and sits under the camera, or press F for full screen.
  4. Press Space to start, or pair your phone as the remote.

What works on a Chromebook

  • Voice follow: Chrome supports speech recognition, so the script can follow your voice.
  • Keyboard control: Space plays and pauses, arrow keys move lines, = and − change speed.
  • Screen stays on: Reframely asks Chrome to keep the screen awake while the prompter is open.
  • Imports: open .docx files downloaded from Google Docs (File → Download → Microsoft Word).

School Chromebooks: some managed devices block the microphone or certain websites. If voice follow won't start, speed scrolling still works; ask your administrator about microphone access.

Using a Chromebook with a glass rig or second screen

A Chromebook can also drive a teleprompter rather than sit under the camera:

  • External display: connect a monitor or a USB-C prompter, open the output window from Display → Second screen / OBS, drag it onto that display and press F. You keep the controls on the Chromebook's own screen.
  • Tablet in a rig: open Reframely on the tablet and use the Chromebook as the remote: with Pro, open Remote on the Chromebook and enter the code.

Shelf, tabs and windows

Pin Reframely to the shelf (browser menu → Cast, save and share → Install page as app on recent ChromeOS) so students or presenters can find it again. To read while recording in the Camera app or a video call, snap Reframely to one side of the screen with the window controls, or keep a narrow window under the camera with the webcam preset.

For teachers and schools

  • No sign-up means students don't need email accounts or parental consent forms just to use the prompter.
  • Scripts are kept in that Chromebook's browser profile. On shared carts, students should copy their script somewhere safe or send it as a link before signing out.
  • For class presentations, the speech length calculator turns a time limit into a word count.

Questions

Is there a teleprompter app for Chromebook?

Reframely is a web teleprompter that runs in Chrome, so it works on Chromebooks without installing anything.

Can students use it?

Yes. There's no account, and scripts stay in the browser on that Chromebook.
