Elgato Prompter not scrolling in Camera Hub
Two Mac problems come up again and again with the Elgato Prompter: script text that won't scroll in Camera Hub, and a DisplayLink window that keeps stealing focus. Here's what users have reported trying, and a workaround that skips Camera Hub's text mode.
Step by step: use an Elgato Prompter as a screen
- Set the Prompter to Display Mode. Connect the Elgato Prompter by USB-C and set it to Display Mode, so your computer sees it as a second screen. Camera Hub isn’t needed.
- Drag Reframely onto it. Open the prompter, drag the browser window onto the Prompter’s screen and press F for full screen.
- Leave Mirror off. The Elgato Prompter flips the picture itself, so pick the Elgato preset with Mirror off. If the words read backwards, turn Mirror on.
- Drive it from your hand. Use a clicker, a Stream Deck or (with Pro) your phone to play, pause and change speed while you look into the lens.
Text won't scroll
On Apple silicon Macs, users have reported that Camera Hub's prompter turns on and accepts windows dragged onto it, but the script never scrolls; one says it worked the day before. The thread has no posted fix (DisplayLink Forum). Before giving up, try:
- Quit and reopen Camera Hub, then unplug and reconnect the Prompter.
- Make sure the Prompter is in Text Mode for scripts, not Display Mode.
- Update Camera Hub and the DisplayLink Manager, and restart the Mac after updating.
DisplayLink Manager keeps popping up
On macOS Sonoma and Sequoia, users report the DisplayLink Manager settings window opening at random, taking keyboard focus mid-presentation (DisplayLink Forum). Things reported in that thread:
- Granting Screen & System Audio Recording permission to both DisplayLink Manager and Camera Hub helped one user, but not others.
- One user reported that in Camera Hub 2.0 or later, holding Command while opening Preferences reveals an option, Ensure DisplayLink Manager is running; unchecking it solved the problem for them.
- Others unplug the Prompter between sessions as a workaround.
Workaround: run the script in a browser window
- Switch the Prompter to Display Mode so the Mac treats it as a monitor.
- Open Reframely in a browser window and drag it onto the Prompter.
- Choose Your rig → Elgato Prompter or a prompter with its own screen, then press F for full screen.
- Control it from the keyboard, a Stream Deck key, or your phone as the remote.
This avoids Camera Hub's text mode, but the Prompter still needs the DisplayLink driver to work as a display on a Mac.
Before you start a live session
- Open the prompter display and Reframely ten minutes before you go live, and do a full test scroll.
- Close DisplayLink Manager's settings window if it's open; it's the one reported to steal focus.
- Click once inside the Reframely window so keyboard shortcuts and clickers go to it, not to another app.
Controlling it without touching the Mac
If focus keeps jumping away, control the prompter from somewhere that doesn't depend on keyboard focus: a phone remote (Reframely Pro) talks to the prompter directly, so a pop-up window on the Mac doesn't interrupt it.
Questions
Why won't my Elgato Prompter scroll text on Mac?
Users have reported it on Apple silicon Macs without an official fix in the thread. Restarting Camera Hub, reconnecting the Prompter and updating Camera Hub and DisplayLink are the first things to try; using Display Mode with a browser teleprompter avoids text mode entirely.
Can I use the Elgato Prompter without Camera Hub?
You need Camera Hub to switch modes, but once it's in Display Mode any window can go on the screen, including a browser teleprompter.
