How many words is a 2-minute speech?

A 2-minute speech is about 240 to 320 words, or around 280 at an average speaking pace. That's about one double-spaced page: enough for an opening, two short points and a close.

0:00 / 0:22 3 steps

Step by step: fit a script to an exact time

  1. Paste the script. The editor counts the words you’ll actually say, leaving out # labels and [notes], and shows how long the script runs at your speed.
  2. Type a target in Fit to. Need it to land at 2:30? Type 2:30 into Fit to and save. Reframely sets the speed for you: here, 165 words a minute.
  3. Read with the time left in view. The prompter counts down the time left as you read, so you know at a glance whether you’re on schedule.

Words and pages for 2 minutes

Fast (160 wpm)320about 1½about half

Pages assume about 250 words to a double-spaced page and 500 to a single-spaced one, in a 12-point font. They're a rough guide; the word count is what matters. For other lengths, use the speech length calculator.

When you get two minutes

  • Introducing a speaker: who they are, why they're here, and their name last, as they walk up.
  • Accepting an award or saying a few words at a work milestone.
  • Opening a longer talk: the first two minutes, which decide whether people keep listening.
  • A class update or a short report in a meeting.

Tips

  • Thank-you lists eat time. Thank people as a group, then name one or two.
  • When introducing someone, check how they pronounce their name, and keep their CV to the parts the audience cares about.

Check the timing before the day

  1. Paste your script into Reframely's editor. It shows the word count and read time as you type.
  2. Type 2:00 into Fit to and save. The scroll speed is set so the script ends on time.
  3. Read it once out loud. If the speed feels rushed, the script is too long: cut words rather than reading faster.

Rehearse it in three passes

  1. Read it aloud once, slowly, and cut any sentence you wouldn't say in conversation.
  2. Time the second read. If it runs over, cut words; don't speed up.
  3. Read it a third time from the prompter and look up at the end of each sentence, so it sounds spoken rather than read.

Two minutes goes quickly. Most people who run over have three points instead of two; drop the weakest.
