How many words is a 3-minute speech?
A 3-minute speech is about 360 to 480 words, or around 420 at an average speaking pace. It's one of the most common lengths there is: the usual target for a wedding toast, and a hard limit in the Three Minute Thesis.
Step by step: fit a script to an exact time
- Paste the script. The editor counts the words you’ll actually say, leaving out # labels and [notes], and shows how long the script runs at your speed.
- Type a target in Fit to. Need it to land at 2:30? Type 2:30 into Fit to and save. Reframely sets the speed for you: here, 165 words a minute.
- Read with the time left in view. The prompter counts down the time left as you read, so you know at a glance whether you’re on schedule.
Words and pages for 3 minutes
| Pace | Words | Double-spaced pages | Single-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow (120 wpm) | 360 | about 1½ | about half |
| Average (140 wpm) | 420 | about 1½ | about 1 |
| Fast (160 wpm) | 480 | about 2 | about 1 |
Pages assume about 250 words to a double-spaced page and 500 to a single-spaced one, in a 12-point font. They're a rough guide; the word count is what matters. For other lengths, use the speech length calculator.
Wedding toasts
Three minutes is long enough for who you are, one good story and a toast, and short enough that the room stays with you. A shape that works:
- Who you are and how you know the couple, in two sentences.
- One story that shows who they are. One, not three.
- What changed when they met, or what you see in them together.
- The toast: ask everyone to raise their glasses, and say their names.
Open the three-minute wedding toast script in Reframely to start from that shape. Speeches at a party run slower than you expect, because of laughter, so write for the slow end: about 360 to 400 words.
The Three Minute Thesis
In the Three Minute Thesis (3MT), a competition founded by the University of Queensland, graduate researchers explain their work in three minutes with a single static slide. Going over three minutes means disqualification (Kent State). Aim for 400 to 430 words so a nervous pace or a pause doesn't push you over, and rehearse with a timer until it finishes at about 2:50.
Other three-minute speeches
- A short eulogy or a tribute at a retirement.
- A pitch at a startup or a community grant event.
- A video message from a manager or a founder.
Check the timing before the day
- Paste your script into Reframely's editor. It shows the word count and read time as you type.
- Type
3:00into Fit to and save. The scroll speed is set so the script ends on time. - Read it once out loud. If the speed feels rushed, the script is too long: cut words rather than reading faster.
